How do you write scripts with Python?

I am learning Python, without any previous programming experience, so I pretty much know nothing. I am having trouble figuring out how to run scripts with Python. I am using VIM as a text compiler, and I'll write the program and save it as a .py, but I just can't figure out how to run it in Python. Sorry if I didn't use correct lingo, I'm a beginner, any help?
