Good hair dye that turns dark brown/black hair lighter brown?

I've got dark brown black hair and the only way to lighten it is to get a pre lightening spray which gradually bleaches your hair to the shade you want it or you have to completely strip back the whole head of hair with bleach then dye it the lighter brown you want.
